My name is John Ray, and I’ve made my living as a performing bassist for almost 20 years. I graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a classical performance degree in 2000, and have been working to develop my own sound and find a niche in the bass world since. I’ve toured and performed with literally hundreds of bands and ensembles, in every style imaginable, on electric (4, 5, and my primary 6 string), keyboard synth and upright basses. I spend a good portion of my time on the road touring, but I have a fully mobile recording rig and record for people all over the world from wherever I am.
I work regularly with one of the most talented drummers I’ve ever heard, Jonathan Greene. If you are interested in a session drummer for your project, we will work together to craft an amazing groove. I also have an extensive network of badass session players I record with at Ovation Sound in Winston-Salem. Contact me for more info on getting the right players for your project.
“We are so blessed to have a network of the greatest players for session work at Ovation Sound. John Ray is hands down the first bass player we call for recording sessions. He puts the work in, plays the tasties, and is always a pleasure to work with. True Professional!”
William Stevens, Ovation Sound
How This Works
I’m interested in recording music that is new, inventive, and, well, musical. I have to be picky with my time and can’t record for everyone who needs a bass line. If you are looking for something more standard please click here for some of my competitors who are a bit cheaper and less particular. If you want to create something new, unique, and full of life and energy, read on.
1. Click the link below. ‘Let’s Do This.’
At checkout, you will fill out a form and upload your track(s). Include your music as an .mp3 file, and be sure to note the tempo and any notes or special instructions for the track. Charts are nice as well, but not necessary. If you have a specific idea for the bass, I am happy to play that, or I will come up with what I think is best. This is what I do – you can rely on me to come up with something cool . If you are interested in having a bass solo, please specify where in the song it should go.
I use top-of-the-line gear and get the highest possible quality recording. I may record direct, mic a cabinet or both depending on the sound I think is appropriate. I have a wide selection of basses (too many…) that I record with, and may record a number of tracks for each tune.
2. Receive a rough mix .mp3 for review
My turnaround time is less than 48 hours, and I will email you back a rough mix of my bass track(s) with your tune for you to review. I will re-record/touch up as much as necessary until you are happy with the finished product.
3. Receive the finished product
Once you are happy with the recording I will send you the final bass track(s) as a .wav file at 24 bit / 44 kHz. The file will start at the same start time as the .mp3 file you sent me, so you will be able to just drag my track into your song in any DAW you are using. I will send you the tracks dry, with no compression or eq, so that you can fit them into your mix how you choose.
